Have you ever walked from one room to another in your house and noticed a significant temperature difference? You may notice that there are hot and cold spots around your home and wonder if there’s a problem with your HVAC system. Here are a few reasons why there are hot and cold spots in your home.
The first thing you should check if you notice hot or cold spots is that your HVAC system has proper airflow. Make sure all of the air vents are open and check your air filter. If it’s dirty, replace it.
If certain areas of your home receive a lot of direct sunlight, you may simply be experiencing solar heat gain. The room with lots of big windows will stay warm during the day while other rooms will stay cool in the shade. If you want to decrease solar heat gain, shades or blinds might be an option.
If you’re still noticing hot and cold spots, take a look at where your thermostat is located. If the thermostat is exposed to direct sunlight or sits next to another source of heat, it isn’t getting an accurate reading of the interior temperature, which it uses to tell the AC when to turn on. If you can’t put shades on the window or move the heat source, consider having the thermostat moved.
Air leaks are a major cause of high energy consumption and improper cooling and heating. If there are any visible cracks or gaps around the frames of windows and doors, seal them off. You might need to replace their weatherstripping as well.
Improperly Installed AC Ductwork
If there are no obstructions to your air vents but airflow is still diminished, you could have damaged or improperly installed AC ductwork. Unfortunately, it’s very common for HVAC ductwork to be installed incorrectly, causing a lot of problems for homeowners. The only way to fix this issue if it is the cause of inconsistent temperatures is duct replacement.
