How can a UV light help keep my family healthy?
Most people have heard about UV lights and how great they are with improving indoor air quality. But just how much benefit do they have? Let’s start with the basics. What is a UV or Ultra-Violet Light? A UV Light is the frequency of light between 200 nanometers (nm) and 400nm. The life span of a UV Light can vary from 1–3 years, and it takes the same energy to run as a 40-watt light bulb.
What does a UV Light do?
A UV Light that is installed in the air duct system purifies the air passing into your home. Air filters are effective in catching particulates, but they fail to kill microorganisms that live in the air. These microorganisms can be the source of mold, bacteria, viruses, pollen, smoke, pet odors and yeasts. A UV Light significantly reduces microbe population and keeps the air in your home cleaner and safer.
A UV light is especially effective in killing organisms stuck to the inside of your air conditioner. Air conditioners create liquid water by condensing water vapor in the air. This creates a moist habitat inside your air conditioner for mold and bacteria to grow. As the air conditioner runs, it constantly blows air across this moist area, creating the potential for spores and other organisms to be blown into the air stream. For this reason, a UV light is typically installed in the duct directly in front of the evaporator coil where the water is condensed.
Just how does a UV Light do that?
A UV Light penetrates the cell walls of the microorganism and damages it. The damaged microorganism is then neutralized and unable to reproduce. Since most homes in California are closed up for extended periods of time, they become the perfect breeding ground for viruses. With the UV Light, this stops reproduction right in its tracks, turning your home into a safe, clean environment for your family.
