One of the simplest ways to do that falls on the homeowner’s shoulders. And it’s a task that, unfortunately, often goes ignored: changing out your air filter.
Why is the air filter so important?
You know what it feels like to drink a thick milkshake through a flimsy straw? That’s what your HVAC system feels like trying to cycle air through your home with a clogged filter.
Besides wasting energy efficiency, it reduces your home’s indoor air quality. This means you’re more likely to have unpleasant odors and allergens in the home and around your family.
How often should you switch your air filter?
It’s a good habit to check your air filter once a month – especially during the hottest and coldest times of year. If you check the filter and it’s dirty, switch it out.
During non-peak months, when you aren’t using your HVAC system as much, you can switch your filter every 2-3 months. That said, every home is different. Other factors, such as pets in the home, can increase how often you need to change filters.
What type of air filter should you use?
Pleated air filters produce the best results in terms of efficiency and air quality. These filters cost a bit more, but it’s a smart investment in your home’s electric bill and family’s health.
