An Air Conditioning Buyer's Guide

August 7, 2014 | Blog

Is your air conditioner nearing 10 years old? Did it surpass that birthday a few years back? If so, it’s time to make a decision in your comfort and your bank account’s best interest. Replace your air conditioner! That’s right, a new, energy-efficient air conditioner won’t just keep you comfy during hot and cold weather, it will pay for itself over time in energy savings! If you’re in the market for a new air conditioning system, check out the helpful facts, hints and tips below.

Sizing

When it comes to choosing the right air conditioner for your home, proper sizing is key! When shopping for prices, make sure to know the square footage of your home and possibly each room within it. This will help your HVAC contractor to determine the correct number of British Thermal Units (BTUs) to properly cool your home. A too small unit will have to run for a longer amount of time in attempt to reach your desired temperature. A too large unit will toggle on and off – wasting energy and money.

Air Filtration

Have you been suffering through allergy season after allergy season without any relief? Did you know that your air conditioner can be an allergy sufferer’s best friend? Not only does it make it comfortable inside (away from the allergens), but it was designed to filter your air! When choosing an HVAC unit, ask about the options for enhanced air filtration. From UV light to highly efficient air filters, you can remove unwanted particles from the air you breathe with your home’s air conditioner.

Energy Efficiency

Do you know what Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) you’re looking for? Here are a few things to consider when purchasing a new air conditioner.

  • SEER is the cooling output during a typical cooling season divided by the energy input of a unit.
  • The higher your SEER, the more efficient your HVAC system is.
  • Some counties even offer sizable rebates to homeowners who opt for air conditioners with SEER ratings of 15 or higher.
  • California requires that new HVAC unit installations have a minimum SEER of 13.
