Three Simple Steps to Save Energy (and Money)

40 years of service

Even though summer is coming to an end, September is still known for being a high energy use month. California weather is unpredictable, and temperatures can jump from the 70s to triple-digits on a dime. These shifts in temperature and generally high-temps can put extra strain on your air conditioner – and your utility bills. If you’re looking for ways to save on energy and money, there are three simple steps you can take to get started.

Step One: Keep Your AC at a Reasonable Temperature

For optimal energy efficiency and savings, experts recommend keeping your AC at 78 degrees during the summer. In the winter, set your thermostat between 68 and 72 degrees. Programmable thermostats are a great tool for maximizing energy savings. If you have a programmable thermostat, set the temperature higher when you won’t be there and have it cool down when you know you will be home. During winter months, keep it cool when you’re out and warmer while you’re home.

Step Two: Change Your Air Filters Regularly

Changing your air filters is a very simple and inexpensive way of maximizing your AC’s potential. Experts recommend that your AC filter should be changed at least once a month, or every 30 days. Plus, an added benefit of changing your air filters regularly is improved indoor air quality and fewer cold and allergy symptoms.

Step Three: Get Seasonal Tune-Ups on Your HVAC Unit

This step goes beyond saving you money on monthly utility bills. Regular, preventative maintenance will help you avoid expensive repairs and extend the life of your HVAC unit.

Like regular maintenance on a car, twice-yearly tune-ups on your AC and heating unit will have your system running at peak performance. Plus, regular maintenance prevents AC breakdowns that can leave you sweating through summer.
