8 Things You Should Never Put in a Garbage Disposal

Your garbage disposal is not invincible. It can chop up many things, but not everything. And that’s something we all must accept. Not sure what exactly your garbage disposal can’t handle? Check out this list of the top things you should never put in a garbage disposal.

  • Bones: Fish bones, chicken bones, bones from your decorative Halloween skeleton – it doesn’t matter. None of them belong in the garbage disposal.
  • Grease: Grease may look like it goes down the drain with no problem, but it can cause build-up and clogs over time. To dispose of your grease, pour it into a plastic container or jar, and throw it in the trash.
  • Coffee Grounds: Do not be fooled by them. They, too, will appear to go down your drain with ease, but they are actually creating a buildup of grainy, sludgy mess.
  • Celery: Celery is too powerful for the garbage disposal. Since the stalks are so stringy, they get tangled up in the blades. Asparagus is a bad idea, too.
  • Egg Shells: The slimy, eggshell membrane can get stuck in the blades and cause all kinds of chaos in your drain. Just throw them in the trash.
  • Plastic: Your drain is not a smaller, sharper trash can. It can’t handle plastic.
  • Paper: See above.
  • Your Fingers: You may think this is common sense, but imagine for a moment that you’re washing the dishes and suddenly your favorite ring slips off and into the garbage disposal. Do NOT reach in to try and get it out. Call a plumber, or unscrew the pipe below yourself to retrieve it.

The goal here is to avoid destroying your drain (and your fingers). For any more questions you might have about drains and plumbing, call us today at Lee’s Air. We’re your one-stop-shop for plumbingair conditioning and heating.
